Starting Over – In the Middle
Midway along the journey of our life
I woke to find myself in a dark wood,
for I had wandered off from the straight path. – Dante

That big fat round number. In spite of what my lovely husband says, there’s just something about turning 50. Half a century – imagine that! Me! How is that even possible? Well, the birth certificate and driver’s license don’t lie.
I had wanted to go to Morocco ever since I was a teenager and saw Phoebe Cates lolling around Marrakesh in an issue of Seventeen magazine. So – weeks before my 50th birthday off we flew to Morroco with a small band of mostly British travellers. Who mostly all seemed to love their jobs.
Well, I loved Morocco. Cried all the way back to the airport. And then cried some more when I got home and tried to imagine going back to the daily grind of commuting into Toronto and spending Monday to Friday doing the same desk job I’d done for more than seven years.
Time for a chMorocco-by-M.-Angel-Herrero-Creative-commonsange. Big time. Luckily the Universe has a way of making things happen when push comes to shove – and push had definitely come to shove, whatever that means! My employer and I amicably went our separate ways. I rediscovered the idea of coaching, signed up for training and here I am. Networking, writing, figuring out how to create a website and meeting fantastic people I never ever would have met sitting in my cubicle downtown. It’s all new and it’s scary and it’s fun and I’m never going back to sit in an office tower ever again. And that’s how the last nine months have unfolded for me.
Bottom line for you:
Do you need to chuck it all in to move to a rainforest in Bali? Go to med school? Save the world? Probably not.
Could your life use a couple of tweaks? Just maybe.
Volunteer. Sign up for a dance class. Try fencing or a hiking club. And if you’re feeling extra brave – AND you’re single! – maybe even take a flier on a speed-dating evening (if nothing else, you’ll have some tales to tell afterwards, I guarantee you).
Just promise me no more sleepwalking. Live your life – every day. Try something you’ve never done before. Rediscover yourself. What are you waiting for?
